Sunday, July 25, 2010: Age Group Categories: The age category for a participant is determined by the age of the child as of 12/31/10. These are the rules we follow as we are a sanctioned event through USA Triathlon. For example if the child’s birthday is in September, their age for the race is whatever age they will be as of the end of 2010. At the Stop sign turn right onto Martin Rd. The school and race day parking is 1/4 mile down the street. If coming from the South, bear right after taking the exit, and at the Stop sign turn right onto the overpass bridge (Seneca Drive), down to the Stop sign. Go right onto Martin Rd., and proceed as above. MANDATORY Packet Pickup and Check-In:

Parents, please take note to verify your child’s name. Please contact sharon @tricolumbia.org , with any concerns. Race Weekend or Day Volunteer Support: If you wish to be a big part of the event, we welcome your support. Contact Sharon@tricolumbia.org to volunteer your time. The kids will appreciate it as will we! Cool T- shirts will be provided to all volunteers. USA Triathlon and the Race Entry: USAT requires all youths participating in sanctioned youth events to be annual members of the organization. This is for insurance and liability. The registration process described on the website allowed for payment of $60. Parents, you will be required to show a Photo ID, as most 7-14 youths may not have any form of photo ID.
This USAT membership is mandatory in order to permit the kids to participate. See www.usatriathlon.org if you have questions or wish to learn more about USA Triathlon, The National Governing Body, in Colorado Springs. Mandatory Race Talk:
When: Saturday, July 24, 2010, 4:30pm Race Day/Event Security : On Saturday, all children officially entered in the event will be issued a special “Columbia Triathlon” wrist band that will be affixed to their wrist. This is the child’s security band and tells all on the race course that they are an official participant in The Tri Columbia Tri KIDZ Triathlon. They must have this band on their wrist on race day and all through the race. No wristband, no race, no excuses. Security is a must for safety, insurance and liability concerns. Race Day Parking : Parking is to take place in the adjacent 7th Day Adventist Chesapeake Conference Center at the corner of Martin Rd. and Quarterstaff Rd. Look for the signs. Note the lots are to the right driving in; parking behind the church is prohibited. Please respect the church’s request. The church is letting us use the lot for the conference center only and in front of the church proper, where there are 15 slots but we cannot use the back lot where the school is as there will be church service on Sunday morning. There is NO parking on Martin Rd. from Audubon to Quarterstaff Rd. and no parking on Quarterstaff Rd. where the bike portion of the event takes place. You may park on Martin Rd down past the Church entrance. Other side streets are open to use as you see fit. Please be respectful of the neighbors.
Race Day Portable Sanitary Facilities: There will be both portable toilets and a hand wash station on site. Pre Event Bike Checks : All entrants may bring in their bikes to Princeton Sports in Columbia, the Official Bike Support Team and receive a free safety check. All bikes must be in sound working order. All bike helmets must be CPSC approved (look inside the helmet if unsure). This is a USAT rule and insurance requirement. The head/brain is your most important possession, and it must be protected at all times while on the bike. Princeton Sports will be at RoadRunner Sports during packet pickup on Friday and Saturday, and at bike racking on Sunday morning, to check bikes and helmets. If you do not have an approved bike helmet your child will not be permitted to participate. No exceptions. Kids: Race Day Morning: Body Marking : Upon arrival you will be “body marked” with your race number on each arm and thigh. Your race day age will be marked on the back of your lower leg with a magic marker. Transition area set up ; Bike racking will take place Sunday morning. There will bike racks to hang your bikes if needed. You will rack and start within your age group, male and female separately. Volunteers will aid and assist you setting up your bike area, like many of you saw at the Tri Camp. No dogs/pets and no glass are permitted. Race Day Timing Services : The timer will be on hand to provide expert timing using the IPICO system. Each participant will be given a timing band on race morning before entering the pool. The band with the chip can be wrapped around either ankle. The chip emits a high frequency radio signal that will pick your number as you cross all mats, at the beginning and end of the swim, the bike and the run/finish. The timing chip will be collected from you after you cross the finish line. It is not yours to keep. We will also use this “chip’ to call out your name for all to hear as You cross the race finish line !! Race Numbers: You will have several race numbers assigned to you that will be in your bag at packet pickup. The Run # must be worn and visible on the front of your body either on a shirt or pinned to a race number belt. Safety pins will be available at packet pickup. The Bike # must be placed/wrapped on the top tube of your bike. It is a peel and stick type. There will also be a small, peel and stick, rectangular number , that should be applied to the front of your bike helmet. This will help the race photographer identify you so that the best photos of you will be taken. The Swim: Children in the older age groups will go into the pool first, followed by the remaining children by descending order of age group. Each age group will have their own colored swim cap. The “wave” start times are posted on the website, so you can see when you will start the race. There will be 5 minute intervals between each swim start group. The swim will be an in water start; no one may jump or dive in. There will be two swimmers assigned to each swim lane and you will stay in your half of the lane as you swim out and back. Distances: 7-8: 50 yds swim 9-10: 100 yds swim 11-12: 150 yds swim 13-14: 200 yds swim Upon exiting the swim, you will be hosed off and then proceed to the bike transition area. The Bike : Once at your bike, you will towel off, put on your bike/run shoes, put on your helmet, and then walk your bike to the sidewalk to the bike start point on Quarterstaff Rd. Every one of you should have one bottle of water to start. It is important to drink during the bike ride and immediately afterward. See the web site ( www.Tricolumbia.org ) for race course maps. Pace yourself! You must always ride on the right side of the road and never cross the center line of the street. There will be police and volunteers at each key intersection. The Run: You will rack your bike, put on a hat, or sunglasses, if you wish, and head out on the run. You will go out the same way you came into transition from the swim, under the blue inflatable arch. You will run across a portion of the pool lot and onto the running path alongside the pool. You will follow the path and the route posted on the web site. There will be a water stop at about the half way point of the run. Follow the orange cones which will mark the route.
