Bethesda, Md., February 16, 2012 – The Make-A-Wish Foundation® of the Mid-Atlantic today announced that the chapter’s annual Make-A-Wish® Triathlon, now in its 29th year, will be held in partnership with the TriColumbia ChesapeakeMan Endurance Festival. This year’s event will take place in Cambridge, Md. on September 29, 2012.
Athletes who have previously competed in the annual Make-A-Wish Triathlon at Sea Colony in Bethany Beach, DE are encouraged to continue to support the Mid-Atlantic chapter by competing in the ChesapeakMan event as a part of the Make-A-Wish family. All funds raised by Make-A-Wish competitors will directly support granting wishes for children with life-threatening medical conditions in Maryland, Delaware, Washington, D.C. and Northern Virginia.
“Moving the annual triathlon event from our longtime home at Sea Colony Resort in Bethany Beach, DE was a difficult decision that was not taken lightly,” said Ambassador Maura Harty, president and chief executive officer of the Make-A-Wish Foundation of the Mid-Atlantic. “Sea Colony has been a great friend of ours for many years. We couldn’t have hosted so many successful triathlon events without their generous support as well as that of the incredible local volunteers – from the fire and police departments to neighborhood merchants and event staff.”
“But we see the chance to partner with TriColumbia for this race as an extraordinary opportunity to grow one of our most important events of the year, and ultimately further our mission to serve local children with life-threatening illnesses,” added Harty. “Joining the ChesapeakeMan Endurance Festival will elevate our event to a regional stage with a higher profile and a more extensive network of triathletes, which ideally means we’ll reach more participants, more volunteers and new Make-A-Wish supporters from across the Mid-Atlantic region.”
The ChesapeakeMan Endurance Festival's Ultra Distance race is the USA Triathlon’s Mid-Atlantic Regional Championship event. As a member of the Make-A-Wish team, athletes will have the opportunity to compete in one of four endurance races this year:
