Celebration Sprint Triathlon Race Results!
Anthony Van Lierop Top Male, Leslie Knibb Top Female

Columbia, MD – Columbia Triathlon Association (CTA) held its inaugural Celebration Sprint Triathlon earlier today at Centennial Park in Columbia, Maryland.  Almost 2,000 participants competed in the race, and nearly 60% of them were female, which illustrates the growing popularity of the sport among women.

The race included a .62-mile swim in Centennial Lake, 17.5-mile bike, and 3.4-mile run.  The top male was Anthony Van Lierop (age 37) from Baltimore, MD with a finish time of 1:23:50, and top female was Leslie Knibb (age 47) from Washington, DC with a finish time of 1:36:56.  (See below for Top 5 Overall male and female finishers, and visit for complete race results, photos and video)

One of the participants, Shane Lauer, a 19-year old with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, competed with the assistance of David Slomkowski, founder of Athletes Serving Athletes (ASA). Shane was pulled in a raft for the swim, seated in a custom-made bike for the ride, and pushed in a custom racing jogger for the run.  Shane competed alongside 20 other non-disabled athletes from ASA’s first ever racing team. ASA, a non-profit organization based in Baltimore, was established in 2006 and offers programs and services to physically, socially and economically challenged individuals in the mid-Atlantic region.  “Our mission is to inspire and prepare challenged athletes to compete in running, triathlon and cycling events, and allow them to feel the thrill of competitive sports,” said Slomkowski. “If they have the will, we’ll find a way!”  (To see photos of Shane and David at the race, visit; and for more on ASA, visit or email
