Columbia, Md. – TriColumbia, the Mid-Atlantic’s premier endurance event production company, hosted the 6th annual Kidz Triathlon today, July 21, 2013, in Columbia, Md. Nearly 500 local kids ages 7-15 participated in the event, making the 2013 Kidz Triathlon one of the largest youth triathlons in the Mid-Atlantic region. Participants tackled various distances depending on age, including:
• Ages 7-8: 50 yard swim, 2 mile bike, .5 mile run
• Ages 9-10: 100 yard swim, 2 mile bike, .5 mile run
• Ages 11-12: 150 yard swim, 4 mile bike, 1 mile run
• Ages 13-15: 300 yard swim, 8 mile bike, 1 mile run
In the 7-8 age division, Ansel Casper and Alexa Aliva won with respective times of 14:06 and 15:11. Griffin Polinsky and Bella Lynch finished first in the 9-10 division with times of 14:01 and 14:59. In the 11-12 age division, Benjamin Lausch and Camryn Ubert finished first with times of 23:28 and 25:07. Lastly, Christopher Crafton and Anna Lausch won the age 13-15 division with times of 37:14 and 40:05. All top finishers took home trophies and awards, while all participants were eligible to win raffle prizes, such as entry into the Nottingham Kids Triathlon, Sling bags, Duffle Bags, race belts and arm warmers.
“The Kidz Triathlon is one of our favorites here at TriColumbia,” said Kari Ebeling, Chief Operating Officer and Race Director at TriColumbia, “We are thrilled each year to see so many local kids and their families participating in this special event, which not only gives kids the opportunity to experience the excitement of a real triathlon just like their adult role models, but also allows them to raise awareness for causes that mean the most to them, from victims of the Boston Marathon to friends battling Leukemia.”
As part of the Maryland Youth Triathlon Series, the TriColumbia Kidz Triathlon aims to provide local youth the opportunity to experience the thrill and excitement of a real triathlon, while boosting self esteem and encouraging healthy lifestyles in a dynamic, family-friendly environment. The Maryland Youth Triathlon Series is the first of its kind youth series in Maryland, promoting sun-safe practices and giving participants the opportunity to fundraise for the Joanna M. Nicholay Melanoma Foundation. In addition, the series encourages healthy choices through multisport, and shows kids that fun is finishing what you start. Other events in the series include the Frederick Kids Triathlon, Truxton Youth Triathlon and Nottingham Kids Triathlon.
