Female endurance athletes finish three Iron Girl endurance events in 2013 to claim coveted title
Columbia, Md. – TriColumbia, the Mid-Atlantic’s premier endurance event production company, announced today 200 women across the region successfully conquered the inaugural TriColumbia Iron Girl Triple Crown Series. These female endurance athletes completed three Iron Girl events in 2013, including the Athleta Iron Girl Columbia Half Marathon, Athleta Iron Girl Columbia Triathlon and Iron Girl Rocky Gap Triathlon, to claim the coveted title of “Iron Girl Triple Crown Finisher.”
The mission of the Iron Girl Series is to empower and inspire women by celebrating their unique grace, and the Triple Crown gave female competitors the opportunity to test their limits in three challenging events. Women of all ages, backgrounds and athletic abilities, including mothers, daughters, grandmothers and friends, completed the three-event journey and achieved various personal goals, from setting an example for their children, to leading a healthier lifestyle.
“Participating in the Iron Girl Triple Crown Series gave me an outlet to compete, push myself and show my 2-year-old daughter what strong women can do,” said Stephanie Blades, Iron Girl Triple Crown Finisher from Columbia, Md. “I raced this Triple Crown in honor of Athletes Serving Athletes, a non-profit that celebrates ALL athletes, especially those with little to no mobility. I have discovered such a loving and supportive network through this organization, in addition to other active moms I have met along my journey, and these individuals inspire and challenge me to be my best.”
The series kicked off April 28, 2013 in Columbia, Md. at the Athleta Iron Girl Columbia Half Marathon. More than 2,000 women participated in the event, which consisted of a challenging 13.1 mile run through downtown Columbia. In the second event of the series, the Athleta Iron Girl Columbia Triathlon, 2,000 women tackled a 0.62 mile swim, 16 mile bike and 3.4 mile run on August 18 through Centennial Park in Columbia, Md. The final event of the series, the Iron Girl Rocky Gap Triathlon, took place in beautiful Rocky Gap State Park on September 8, with more than 900 women participating in the 0.5 mile swim, 16 mile bike and 2.5 mile run.
“I volunteered at the 2012 Athleta Iron Girl Columbia Triathlon produced by TriColumbia and witnessed the beauty and empowerment all the women shared, regardless of age, shape or size,” said Gina Rower, 2013 Iron Girl Triple Crown Finisher from Ellicott City, Md. “So, when I heard of the Iron Girl Triple Crown Series, I was sold! I joined Team Conquer Cancer with the Claudia Mayer Cancer Resource Center and raised $1,400 this year, racing my hardest using the motivation of those who supported me and the cause. Each event was truly amazing, and I cannot wait to have more friends join me in 2014!”
Participants were given the option to register for one, two or all three Iron Girl events, and those who registered and completed all three in their entirety were awarded title of “Iron Girl Triple Crown Finisher.” In addition to each race’s finisher medal, the 200 Iron Girl Triple Crown finishers will receive a special Triple Crown medal and an exclusive Iron Girl necklace charm.
“We are incredibly proud of the Iron Girls who completed their journeys to become Iron Girl Triple Crown Finishers,” said Kari Ebeling, Race Director and Chief Operating Officer at TriColumbia. “Our goal in creating this series was to celebrate women, and help them to feel confident and strong through endurance sports. Each of these women trained tirelessly over the past several months, even years, to achieve something great, and are an inspiration to us all!”
