Columbia, Md. –TriColumbia, today announced it has made the decision, after careful consideration, to cancel the Rocky Gap Triathlon scheduled for Saturday, May 31, 2014 at Rocky Gap State Park in Flintstone, Md.
TriColumbia's decision to cancel this year's event was due to a number of circumstances. “It was a difficult decision to make and we wanted out athletes to have time to adjust their plans,” said LJ White, Executive Director at TriColumbia. “There were changes that took place outside of the control of TriColumbia that made for hosting an Olympic distance triathlon in this location challenging.”
Some of the changes to the race venue included: a new limit to the availability of the road used for an Olympic distance bike course, which led to the need for an alternate bike course, & the limiting of the run course by the local Casino which is new to the area since last year’s race.
TriColumbia is still set to host its 3rd annual Iron Girl Rocky Gap Triathlon on September 7, 2014 at Rocky Gap State Park in Flintstone, Md. The Iron Girl Rocky Gap Triathlon, as a beginner level race, is more in-line with the facility and what it can offer to all athletes and spectators alike. The enclosed course throughout the scenic Rocky Gap State Park will support camaraderie among the athletes and even more spectator support.
The Cumberland YMCA, is looking to host a different version of the Rocky Gap triathlon, on or around the same date. All athletes currently registered for the event, will be able to decide if they would like to keep their registration and participate in the Cumberland Y’s event, or they may receive the full value of their entry transferred to an alternate entry into any other TriColumbia race (that is currently not sold out) – or – a full refund.
In conclusion said White, “It is a gorgeous area to host a race, and we look forward to hosting the TriColumbia Iron Girl Rocky Gap sprint triathlon in September in cooperation with the Cumberland YMCA. TriColumbia will be sending out an email out to all registered participants as soon as the Cumberland YMCA has set their plans and details for their new race. We would like to thank the athletes, and volunteers who have offered to support the event; and apologize for any inconvenience this decision may have caused."
