2011 Celebration Sprint Triathlon

Award ceremony is concluding.  It's been a fabulous day here at the 2011 Celebration Triathlon.  Lots of wonderful memories were made, and we at TriColumbia thank all those who helped make this day great including our sponsors, volunteer and community organizations, charity teams, tri clubs, police, fire and rescue groups, spectators, and, most of all the athletes, who gave it their all to cross that finish line! 

Don't forget to check out our 2011 events that are still open for registration including the TriColumbia Kidz Triathlon and the ChesapeakeMan Endurance Festival.  See you soon!

Congratulations to Shane Lauer and Team ASA who assisted Shane in completing this event for the second year in a row.  ASA makes dreams come true by providing the thrill of athletic competition to those who would otherwise be unable to participate.

All athletes are able to get a free massage complements of TriColumbia via the Maryland Professional Sports Massge Team. Thanks also to the Womens Giving Circle, one of the many charities that TriColumbia supports, who is manning the complementary athlete food tent full of organic goodies from David's Natural Market.

Relays and Paratriathletes are off. Team ASA is here today to assist Shaun Lauer to compete for the 2nd year in a row.  Shaun and Team ASA also completed our recent Subaru Ironman 70.3 EagleMan race just two weeks ago in Cambridge, MD.  Shaun has Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy and is thrilled to be part of Team ASA!  Thanks to Dave Slomkowski, Executive Director of ASA who is part of the team (bike) along with Chip Connor (swim), and Ben Mortenson (run).

Lead runner is just minutes away from finishing..looks like it might be our winner from last year, Anthony Van Lierop, 38 of Baltimore. His time last year was 1:23:50.  He is 200 meters from the chute!

Suzy Serpico, local super star triathlete is in the upcoming wave - women 30 - 24.  Suzy is a Howard County P.E. teacher working to mentor our youth in health and fitness. Suzy has participated in TriColumbia events for years, and is a training coach for TriColumbia.  She placed 1st overall among open elite women at the 2011 Columbia Triathlon in May, and placed 2nd overall among amateur women at the 2011 Ironman 70.3 EagleMan Triathlon two weeks ago which qualified her for a spot at the Ford Ironman World Championships!  Suzy participated in last year's World Ironman Championship in Kona!

Tim Nohe, age 58 from Catonsville has found a passion in exercise and multisport. Tim struggled with his weight, decided to get healthy and began running. Since then he completed his first multisport event - a duathlon, and his first 1/2 marathon in May, 2011. Today he is on to his very first triathlon right here at the Celebration Triathlon. His favorite quote is "Start by doing what is necessary, then do what is possible, and suddenly, you will be doing the impossible." -- Giovanni Francesco di Bernardone.

Also competing today is Donald Hawkins.  75 years young, Donald is our olderst competitor today.  Molly Sherwood is our oldest woman at 70 who will be competing today.  Good luck to you both.  You are an inspiration to us all!

Yellow wave heading into the water - our elders - Men and Women age 55+.  Bob  Bartolo is doing his very first triathlon today at 70 of Columbia MD.  His wife, Sadj has done triathlons for many years with TriColumbia.  In fact, she was our oldest entrant at The Columbia Triathlon. She has switched places with Bob and will be cheering him on today.

Athletes are streaming in. Parking is being aptly handled by the Howard County Explorers. Atletes are setting up their transition area, getting their bodies marked by our fabulous volunteers. So many groups are here providing volunteer support including Team Inspiration, 25/45, Mid-Maryland Tri Club, Chesapeake Paddlers. Thanks to all our volunteers today for helping out. This event could not take place without you!
