Jun 10, 2012 8:08 amBest of luck to Larry Perry III. On October, 25, 2006, he was on his way back to his FOB in Iraq when the HMMWV he was riding in was hit by an IED. Larry was thrown 35 feet from the truck. Just two days before the accident, his platoon was involved in another IED accident, and since Larry was the Hospital Corpsman and the only medic in the convoy, he deicded not to wear his seatbelt in case something were to happen. Not wearing his seatbelt is what saved his life. Larry underwent 30 surgeries in two years.
In June 2010, Larry completed his first triathlon. Triathlon has become a way for Larry to stay healthy. He credits triathlons for helping to cope with PTSD and depression.

Jun 10, 2012 5:51 amGood luck to Shane Lauer! Shane, 19, of Phoenix, MD, a disabled athlete confined to a wheelchair, will race in his second triathlon of the season on his quest to compete in and finish a full distance race this September. To our knowledge no athlete living with Duchene’s muscular dystrophy has ever attempted that distance.
Over the last four years, Lauer has competed in numerous multisport events, including three full marathons, two sprint triathlons and three half distance triathlons. For any athlete this is a substantial accomplishment, but Shane Lauer is not just any athlete. Lauer, a student athlete at Dulaney High School, suffers from Duchene’s muscular dystrophy.
Lauer will compete with the assistance of a team of athlete volunteers from the non-profit organization Athletes Serving Athletes (ASA) that includes Chip Connor, David Slomkowski and Ben Mortenson. Connor, from Glen Arm, MD is director of Melalueca Wellness Company and will tow Shane in a custom designed harness and raft during the swimming leg of the race. Slomkowski, of Timonium, the Founder and Executive Director of ASA will bike with Shane in a specialized bicycle and Mortenson, also Shane’s legal guardian, and director of Young Life Capernaum, will push Shane across the finish line in a custom built racing jogger.
Jun 10, 2012 5:48 amTeam Inspiration is racing here today! Four-time Ironman World Champion Chrissie Wellington told Roseann that a reporter once asked her how she stays “feminine” even though triathlon is not very “feminine.” Although Chrssie had some ill words to say to the reporter for saying such a thing, she told the reporter that she paints her toenails red before a race. Team Inspiration had a table set up at the expo and packet pick up yesterday for folks to paint her nails (men and women) before the race!
Team Inspiration is a nonprofit organization that was founded on the belief that the purpose in life is to help one another. Their mission is to empower cancer warriors in their healing process. TEAM INSPIRATION provides online and community-based resources to promote the healing process and foster a better quality of life for persons living with cancer. It is their belief that we should help and inspire one another in our life journey, especially when faced with challenging circumstances.
