Jun 24, 2012 7:21 amChase Baker, paratriathlete is out of the water!
Jun 24, 2012 7:20 amWe have an inspirational group of paratriathletes competing in today's event all showing true grit and proving that the only limits we have in life are those we place on ourselves!
Chase Baker is no stranger to challenge; helots his right leg in a near fatal car crash in 1991 at the age of 18 while he was a senior in high school. After falling asleep at the wheel and running into a tree head on at 75 miles per hour, among other injuries both of his legs were shattered. After three days in the hospital, the right leg was amputated below the knee. Most of the next year was spent in a wheelchair, lifting weights and getting stronger. After taking his first steps with a prosthetic leg, he enrolled at Ohio State University and joined the wheelchair basketball team and intramural volleyball team. In 1996 he entered a swimming competition and began bringing home medals. This was "it" for Baker. He set three American records, won numerous medals, and currently holds two national records. In 2000 he went on to win two gold medals and four silver medals at the Paralympic trials. Swimming led to running and cycling, and in 2000 Baker became the ITU World Champion in Perth, Australia.
In 2004 Chase finally reached his goal of racing an Ironman triathlon. He raced the Ironman Wisconsin race in Madison Wisconsin and place first in the Physically Challenged Division.

Jun 24, 2012 6:51 amOur first wave in the water will be our relay teams, paratriathletes, and physically challenged athletes. Jeff Glasbrenner is here addressing the crowd; he is an amazing "hero". His opportunity in life came when he was just 8 yrs old and suffered a traumatic farming accident, leaving him a below the knee amputee. Most people would call this a tragedy, but Jeff says it was his greatest opportunity, and he chose to embrace it. Jeff has accumulated quite a resume. He holds a National Championship in wheelchair basketball, and has played professionally in Europe for 3 years. In addition, he is an avid triathlete who has competed in both full and half distance Ironman events. In 2007, Jeff won the physically challenged division at Ironman Wisconsin, placed 3rd a the ITU World Championships in Hamburg, and won the Chicago Triathlon in the physically challenged division. Most recently, Jeff completed EIGHT Ironman competitions in 8 months! Jeff is a dedicated husband and father of 2.

Our beneficiary of Celebrating Heroes, Medstar National Rehabilitation Network provides opportunities and support to people with physical disabilities so they can pursue active lifestyles through physical fitness and competitive athletics.
