In October 2006, Marcie Lovell suffered from multiple Pulmonary Emboli (PE) in her lungs (blood clots). After a lengthy stay in the hospital, Marcie received the news that she was suffering from two blood disorders and part of her lung was necrotic, and that there was a chance that she might not be able to run again. The fact that she was in incredible shape at the time was the only thing that saved her life. Luckily, Marcie is able to still run and do, even though, she continues to experience fatigue and other side effects from the blood thinners she is on due to her condition. In 2011, with the support of friends, Marcie went on the quest of completing a sprint triathlon. On June 3, 2011, to her biggest fear and her doctor’s concern, she experienced a bike wreck. After two years of taking some time to heal, overcoming physical and mental challenges and with much determination, Marcie is able to participate in her 3rd Athleta Iron Girl Columbia Triathlon this year, with the hope of raising money to support young girls who would like to participate in Girls on the Run, a 501(c)3 positive youth development program which combines an interactive curriculum and running to inspire self-respect and healthy lifestyles in pre-teen girls. Marcie cherishes each breath, and is very thankful to be here to share special moments with friends and family. We wish you the best of luck, Marcie!

In 1997, Debbie Berklehammer, at the young age of 31, was given just months to live due to a spinal cord tumor at C2-C7, a non-cancerous, but life threatening illness. Not only did she survive this horrible experience, but she thrived. This year’s Athleta Iron Girl Columbia Triathlon represents so much to Debbie. Even with limitations with her right hand, numbness and tingling in her legs and arms and some mobility issues, Debbie has set the ultimate goal of completing her first ever triathlon today. Overcoming these limitations and conquering this year’s triathlon would be incredibly gratifying for Debbie. Last November, she published her memoir, Point of View on Dying and Living, and has since then been busy sharing her story and constantly inspiring others. Please visit her website (http://www.debbieberkelhammer.com/) for more information on her book. Good luck and congrats to you, Debbie!

This past November, 49-year-old Patricia Young of Eldersburg, Md. was diagnosed with breast cancer, and just recently underwent what she calls her healthcare triathlon: surgery, chemotherapy and radiation. This year's Athleta Iron Girl Columbia Triathlon marks Patricia’s 4th Athleta Iron Girl Columbia Triathlon, making her just one triathlon away from meeting her goal of competing in 5 triathlons. Best of luck today, Patricia!

37-year-old Rebecca Ward from Kensington, Md. suffers from a collagen synthesis disorder called Ehlers Danlos, a genetic condition with multiple subtypes of physical expression. At the age of 35, Rebecca began her journey to lose weight and gain the ability to run again. At around the same time, her husband was deployed to Afghanistan, so she proceeded to join a running group called Wear Blue Run to Remember, honoring fallen soldiers, fighting soldiers and their families. Every swim she makes, every mile she runs or cycles, she does in honor of our American military service members who are no longer with us. Ehlers Danlos hurts and makes life a little harder for Rebecca, but she is still capable of doing things, and is fortunate to be alive. Rebecca continues to dedicate her events to those who cannot be here. Today, she is participating in the Athleta Iron Girl Columbia Triathlon! Good luck, Rebecca!!

This morning, 24-year-old Baltimore native Whitney Sibol received the 2013 Athleta “Power To The She” Award. Whitney planned to participate in the 2012 Iron Girl Columbia Triathlon, however, was in a horrific boating accident whiletraining. In her hospital bed, Whitney registered for the 2013 race, and will finally have the opportunity to compete after more than a year of surgeries and intense physical therapy.

The Athleta “Power To The She” honors one woman whose story has the power to inspire athletes and women everywhere.

Congrats, Whitney!
