Trilights for other events

As we wrap up this gorgeous morning at Rocky Gap State Park, we wanted to send a special shout out to Allison Nederveld, 32, of Hyattsville, Md., who finished today's triathlon in 2:07. Allison, who used to weigh 250 pounds, could barely walk up a flight of stairs when she started going for long walks around her neighborhood. A year after dedicating herself to becoming healthy, Allison completed her FIRST triathlon, remembering the times people told her she could never finish one on her own! Congratulations Allison!

Congratulations to these superstar Iron Girls who finished their journeys today to become Iron Girl´╗┐ Triple Crown Winners!

These women conquered not one, not two, but THREE Iron Girl events this year, including the Athleta´╗┐ Iron Girl Half Marathon in April, the Athleta Iron Girl Columbia Triathlon in August, and today's Iron Girl Rocky Gap in beautiful Flintstone, Md. You did it!!

Volunteers Taylor and Samantha (perhaps future Iron Girls themselves) welcome home their mom, who is not only a finisher today, but an Iron Girl Triple Crown Winner!

37-year-old Rebecca Ward from Kensington, Md. is competing today to prove her disease CANNOT stop her. Rebecca suffers from a collagen synthesis disorder called Ehler Danlos, causing unstable joints, which makes even the simplest tasks, such as walking and sleeping, difficult. She began her journey two years ago when she could barely walk, and now cannot get enough of this active lifestyle. She says her disease hurts and makes life difficult, but she is more than capable of making it to the finish. She competes in every race in honor of American Military Heroes who are no longer with us.

None of our races would be possible without the help of our amazing volunteers! From start to finish, these folks are up before the sun rises and are the last to leave at the end of the day. THANK YOU!

As our Iron Girls make their way home this morning, we would like to honor Erin, who was unable to make it today due to injury. Her sister Kristi however wanted to make sure we heard her incredible story in hopes it may inspire others!

In Kristi's words:

"Almost two years ago my sister Erin and I sat in the Trainer's assessment room: nurturing a formerly broken leg and a severely wounded ego, Erin admitted she hadn't seen a scale in years. After months of commitment to food logging, cardio doing, weight lifting, candy declining, outside praise and even criticism; her confidence is what dominates the room entering as a woman who has harnessed her strength in capacities she'd never imagined possible. This champ blew through obstacles (college, peers, a broken leg..) that have so often halted many others' attempts. Congratulations to my beautiful sister for kicking butt and proving that with seriously hard work, boatloads of patience, a reasonable goal and admirable commitment you can take control & stop making excuses to adapt an all-natural, healthier, sustainable lifestyle. Because of a muscle spasm from swimming, Erin and I will not be able to compete in the Rocky Gap Triathlon this weekend, and she is heartbroken. But we will cheer from afar and will be participating in our very own Manhattan-Tri this October! Girls Rule!"

These women took on 13.1 miles at the Athleta Iron Girl Half Marathon in April, stuck it out the rain at the Athleta Iron Girl Columbia Triathlon in August, and finished the 0.5 mile swim, 16 mile bike and 2.5 mile run today! Congratulations Triple Crown Winners!

Good luck today to 40-year-old Helen Burdman of Baltimore! Helen signed up for the 2012 Athleta Iron Girl Columbia Triathlon, then discovered she was pregnant! She gave birth to her baby boy, Ben, her third child, on August 21, 2012, and was of course unable to compete! However, Helen is on track to complete the Iron Girl Triple Crown this year, and finishing today's race will be the end of her journey to the goal. As she says, "Three kids, Three events, Three sports....coincidence?"

See you at the finish Helen! You are already an Iron Girl!

At the last minute, she decided to drive up with her friend and compete this weekend, saying she wants to "Celebrate Life." GO WENDY! See you at the finish.
